Tireless Artist - Art dolls / White Tender Demon

Tireless Artist – Art dolls / White Tender Demon

I just can’t describe the wonderful feeling of creating a doll. I enjoy each process. First they appear in my mind, and I am carrying them there for a while. I am trying to see as many details as possible – the face, the position, the colors, the fabrics of the outfit, all the accessories and finally to guess the character’s name and the story behind it. When I know enough, I am starting to work. I’m making sketches and notes in purpose to put all the ideas together and I keep it as a reminder on my table during the whole doll making process.
I never stop getting surprised, when a simple peace of clay turns into a face with its own character. It takes a lot of hours until I am completely satisfied with the sculpting. I keep cutting, sanding and sculpting again until there comes a moment when I see – yes, this is it!

Carisa Swenson – The Mouse King – detail

Carisa Swenson’s passion for creating curious creatures springs from many sources—a love of Greek mythology and Ray Harryhausen’s creations when she was a child, an appreciative eye for Henson Workshop in her teens, to the weird and wonderful films of Jan Svankmajer and The Brothers Quay in her twenties. But when Carisa studied with world-renowned doll artist Wendy Froud, the final die was cast: posable dolls would forever own her soul and trouble her nights, stirring her with a fervor that could only be quelled by stitching and sculpting her dreams into reality. Since 2006 Carisa’s work has been featured in several exhibitions and publications, including the Melbourne Fringe Festival, NYU’s acclaimed annual « Small Works Show », Art Doll Quarterly, and Spectrum 17. Carisa has an unhealthy obsession with rabbits and rabbit tales which she blames squarely on « Watership Down ». Both the book and the movie. Especially the movie.

The little girls / Les “petites bonnes femmes” de Valérie HADIDA, sculpteure et peintre. (France)

Isabelle RAKOTOVAO (Historienne d’art).

School of Visual Arts and advertising of the city of Paris (EMSAT). Work in the workshop of Marielle POLSKA for 6 years. Paul Ricard Foundation Prize in 1991. Exhibited in galleries since 1990.

Her  » little girls  » or lolita’s:  » as she names her … Probably with a bit of provocation, but certainly with great tenderness . These multiple female figures are a timeless look , without constraints, outsized . The teenager barely out of childhood, mature woman , they are all there to remind us of the progress of women, women. Proud or low, action or pending , fragile or strong, driven by the wind of life or buttress against its vicissitudes, none leave indifferent … The « little girls  » Valerie sculptures is an emotional trip through human soul. «
Isabelle RAKOTOVAO (Art historian) .

Apart sculpture, Valérie Hadida also led to the TV , the heroes of The Neverending Story or those of Bob Morane.
and the anti- Shrek,  » Dragon Hunters  » she took her first steps in cinema . Dragons who led straight to Malaria , the Kingdom of Igor .

« Symbolize whatever grand or gracious thing he will by whiteness, no man can deny that in its profoundest idealized significance it calls up a peculiar apparition to the soul. »
-Herman Melville, Moby Dick

Spirits, sacred creatures, and phantoms from the dream world inhabit my work. They are the intermediaries that connect us with the (inner) realm of the collective unconscious and the (outer) kingdom of nature.

Scott Radke was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in the nearby suburb of Strongsville. Radke has experimented with various media throughout his life and currently focuses on the creation of sculptural hybrid creatures with an extraordinarily, innocent, yet dark twist. In 1999 the popularity of his marionettes allowed him to leave his mind-numbing job at a bed-frame factory to pursue his creative passion on a full-time basis. His marionettes have been featured in films including Voices In My Head, a BBC documentary directed by David Malone; Desolation Sound, starring Jennifer Beals; God in the Machine, starring Thomas Jay Ryan; and Birthday Massacre’s music video, Blue. Radke’s work has been published internationally in magazines including Bizarre (England), DPI (Taiwan), Refused, and Skratch. *He has* shown his work at BLK/MRKT Gallery (CA), M Modern Gallery (CA), Strychnin Gallery (Germany), Jonathan Levine’s former Tin Man Alley (PA), and CB’s 313 (NYC) among others. Radke currently lives in Cleveland where he has created set designs, costumes, and masks for choreographer Sarah Morrison. Sarah and Scott married soon after their first creative collaboration, and their home has grown over the past ten years to include their daughter Isabella. 4 cats, and a lot of goldfish.
