“The quality of our lives is enriched and enhanced by surrounding ourselves with art that express values beyond their aesthetic, that possess intelligence in their creation, that one can interact with and that will stimulate the senses every time one engages with them.

Over the past thirty-five years I have travelled to remote areas of the planet, fascinated by cultures who live in community with nature – to engage with artists whose work is imbued with powerful connections to their ancestral lands. The awareness that art-making acts as a vehicle for understanding our place within a greater context, guides my own artistic pursuits.”

“Spirit Within”
2013 One of a Kind
Hydrocal, Steel, Pigment
27″H 24″W 8″D

To give this sculpture its power, or “internal dynamic”,  I developed a process that shatters the veneer of the horse as it is cast. Once cured, pigments wiped across the sculpture reveal myriad random cracking and unseen textures – a wholly unexpected landscape surfaces as the colours are absorbed by the material. A unique artwork is uncovered, with no possibility for accuracy in reproduction or consistency in finish.

From one style to the other, from one artistic medium to another… Sculptures of Grzegorz Gwiazda. (Pologne) – Bronze, resin, ceramics, paper…

Grzegorz Gwiazda - heretyk details

About figurative: This seems to be the only indisputable element of this artist’s works: nevertheless, by taking a closer look, Gwiazda makes his human figures appear out of shapeless mass of matter. Therefore, his characters tend to or come from abstraction.
About titles: They – as the characters they describe – come from the classical themes of the history of ancient arts, such as, for example, the Minotaur, or from the origins of modern times, such as, for example, the cyclist. Nevertheless, one can easily realize that, behind past subjects, Gwiazda is hiding characters from the present.
About the style: Each of his sculptures has a prevailing style: some of them are certainly expressionist works; others are so solemn that they recall the socialist realism; others are more abstract; some others show the violence of the late 19th century realism or of the modern realism of the Young British Art; others are warped in surrealist or symbolist tone. Nevertheless, the prevailing style is continuously denied in the body itself of the sculpture, so that every work shows a stylistic reference and its opposite at the same time.

About the medium: In all Gwiazda sculptures, great attention is paid to the colouring and the patina. Sometimes not only the colour is important but also the fact itself that it is “painted” on the work, insomuch as the artist leaves the effects of the drops and strokes visible. One might wonder if the sculptures are a mass that emerges from the two-dimensional surface of painting or if the latter is the inevitable conclusion of the sculptor’s work.

Nicola Hicks – Closed up horse – Life study – 2012 / sculptures

Hicks studied at the Chelsea School of Art from 1978 to 1982 and at the Royal College of Art from 1982 to 1985.

Animals are her primary subject matter, usually sculpted in straw and plaster. This was unusual for an artist in the 80s, by which time abstract sculpture and installation art had become the norms in the art world. Hicks also works on huge sheets of brown paper on which she works up her dynamic charcoal drawings. Many of the sculptures have subsequently been cast in bronze, often with such subtlety that every fragile detail of plaster and straw is reproduced.

I model form because it is the most natural way for me to express an idea or feeling. I model the horse because its form has been imprinted into my consciousness through long hours of  interaction, focused observation and drawing.   While I am fascinated with the beauty and elegance of equine design, it is the sensitive spirit of the horse which invites exploration of more abstract deeper meanings.  Striving towards goals and seeking adventure juxtaposed to finding peace and serenity are themes that appear in my work, alongside thoughts on a gregarious social life versus introspective solitude.

Dirk De Keyzer – Sculptures bronze

Anna Gillespie – Sculptures

The sculpture shows the time of gathering but also a gathering up of transience, as if by embracing time you might stop its perpetual motion. And in bronze it is caught forever.
In such work the distinction between the human and the natural world is blurred, reminding me of Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses,’ in which people are transformed into trees, birds, and flowers. In all the tales the transformation is an act of mercy – so the self-obsessed, lovelorn youth Narcissus becomes a flower instead of suffering death, and the devoted old couple Baucis and Philemon are changed into trees at the same time. There is real compassion in Gillespie’s work too, and she would understand that process of becoming, for in those sculptures which do not make use of the twigs and seeds which became a characteristic so beloved of her admirers, there is still a struggle to break free of what was and become something else. So a white figure is imprisoned within a stone wall, and people wrapped in duct or masking tape are infused with extraordinary energy and given the gift of flight.
This is the work of an artist at the height of her powers, who is involved in an endless process of change herself – a serious, passionate quest for synthesis.

Sculptures émotionnelles de Sandrine Brillaud

Sculptures émotionnelles de Sandrine Brillaud. (Nantes, France)

Sculptures monumentales de Javier Marín

Sculptures monumentales de Javier Marín. (born in Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico in 1962)

Javier Marin’s sculpture a unique and dynamic blend of Western European and Mexican culture. Working quickly, primarily in clay, Marín does not refer to a model but instead relies on his remarkable knowledge of the human form gathered from years of drawing directly from the figure. Process is one of the artist’s most obvious passions, spikes of bronze are often left exposed to show the paths of molten metal flowing into the cast figure. During the creation of a work, words might be quickly inscribed onto the raw clay, holes gouged and support structures left exposed. It is this deliberate coarseness combined with his elegant classic approach to the figure that combines to give these works such power and substance.
